communal goals & STEM
We propose that one reason that people opt out of STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) fields is that these fields are thought to impede goals of working with or helping others. Our goal congruity model thus suggests that people who highly value these goals will especially select out of STEM. Because women especially value communal goals, investigating these goal processes may help explain gender gaps in STEM recruitment and retention.
gender and political psychology
These projects use a social role theory framework to understand how gender roles intersect with political decisions and attitudes.
How do people perceive social change, and when do they adapt to it versus react against it? In these projects, we focus both on change in gender roles and general processes underlying change.
